| Software Products The
Software offerings in the Backup Appliance are organized into three pay-for-service
categories:
Appliance Software
Client Software
Agent Software
The Appliance
Software consists of three components – the STORServer
Console (Using
Storage Server 2003 operating system), the appliance management interface
called STORServer
Manager, and the TSM backup, archive and disaster recovery application
from IBM. These components are included in the price of the backup appliance.
The Client
Software consists of application software
that resides on every machine the STORServer will be backing up. All
the clients are
connected to the STORServer through the network. Client software is sold
at two levels of licenses:
- Server Clients that serve up data to
other systems, and
- Workstation Clients that operate on their own
The Agent
Software provides extra functionality specifically designed
around 3rd party backup clients, database applications and SAN connectivity
to the STORServer over fiber. The database applications include both
mail applications like Exchange and Lotus, and relational databases like
Oracle and SQL. All database agents are priced by CPU. The 3rd party
backup clients have special pricing provided by their vendors.
There are many other software functions within
the STORServer that come included at no extra cost (except for the
lower priced Model 1 appliances
which use “lite” license offerings), including:
- Disaster Recovery
Manager – DRM – a
daily updated disaster recovery plan for all machines registered
to the STORServer.
- Shared Library Services – allowing
multiple libraries to be attached to the STORServer. There are
no extra charges for libraries
by their size.
- Electronic Vaulting – moving data
from one STORServer to another, or remotely building a copy pool
in an off-site location,
piped directly from a STORServer.
Additional products are also available from STORServer, like HSM, Content
Management, and Lifecycle Management utilities around Compliance.
Several 3rd party products are certified by STORServer, but must be
purchased through other sources.
